Job Announcement
Position: Program Associate or Program Director, Environmental Risk, Vulnerability and Adaptation Program, The International Secretariat of the Global Change SysTem for Analysis, Research and Training (START), Washington, DC, USA. Level of appointment will depend on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
About START: START is an international network of science committees, research centers, and collaborating scientists that enables and promotes global environmental change research and applications for improved, science based management of environmental risks in the developing world. START achieves these goals through multi-institutional, interdisciplinary research and assessment projects; education, fellowship and training programs; science and policy workshops; and mobilization of human, institutional and financial resources. The START network includes committees and research centers in Africa, East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Oceania. The International START Secretariat, which is located at the American Geophysical Union headquarters in Washington, DC, USA, coordinates and supports activities of the START network. START is a partner in the Earth System Science Partnership and is co-sponsored by the international research programmes on global environmental change of the International Council for Science (ICSU): the International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change (IHDP), the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP), and the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP). START's program on Environmental Risk, Vulnerability and Adaptation seeks to promote and enhance capacity for (i) research and assessment that advances understanding needed for environmental risk management and (ii) communication of risks and response options to decision makers and at-risk groups. The program emphasizes integrative research and assessment that brings together natural and social sciences, participatory approaches that engage stakeholders with scientists, and decision support methods that focus on information that is needed to make better decisions. Program activities are implemented with a variety of international partners and include development, coordination and implementation of risk and vulnerability assessments, fellowship programs, global environmental change education curricula, training and advanced study institutes, science and policy dialogues and science communication. Examples of recent and on-going projects include Assessments of Impacts and Adaptation to Climate Change (AIACC; www.aiaccproject.org), Advancing Capacity for Climate Change Adaptation (ACCCA; www.acccaproject.org), African Climate Change Fellowships (www.pass-africa.org/climate.html), and Biodiversity Conservation in a Changing Climate (www.pass-africa.org/biodiversity.html).
Responsibilities: The Program Associate will manage the implementation of assigned program projects with minimal oversight, including: planning, coordinating and monitoring implementation of project activities with partner organizations; establishing and collaborating with external project advisory committees; providing technical guidance to external project teams; coordinating calls and reviews of grant and fellowship applications; editing reports of grant and fellowship recipients; leading the preparation of project reports and other project outputs; preparing outreach materials; and organizing workshops and other events. The Program Associate will also contribute to developing new project concepts and writing grant proposals.
More senior/experienced applicants will be considered for appointment at the level of Program Director. Additional responsibilities of the Program Director will include long-term programmatic and financial planning for the program; scientific direction of the program; management of START staff to implement program activities; develop funding and concepts for new projects; develop and implement an outreach program to increase visibility of the program and START; develop relationships between START and other organizations; represent the program and START in international science and policy meetings; and support the Director of START to plan and implement activities to advance the goals of START.
Qualifications at Program Associate Level:
- Doctoral degree in field related to environmental science, environmental risk, environmental policy or development studies;
- Three or more years work experience managing scientific projects;
- Demonstrated ability to manage scientific projects;
- Strong knowledge of science and policy issues related climate change and other forms of global environmental change, particularly as they relate to developing countries;
- Technical capabilities with the methods of risk, vulnerability and adaptation assessment;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English (capabilities in other languages is an advantage);
- Excellent technical writing and editing skills;
- Ability and desire to work in multidisciplinary setting;
- Willingness to travel internationally; and
- Eligibility to work in the US.
Additional Qualifications for Appointment at Program Director Level:
- Five or more years work experience managing large, complex, international science projects or programs;
- Demonstrated ability to lead significant scientific programs;
- Demonstrated success in grant writing and fund raising;
- Ability to give public presentations and technical presentations to scientific audiences;
- Record of research and publication in areas related to global environmental change and environmental risk.

Internship Announcement
Networking Intern
START is seeking an intern for Summer 2008. The intern will work together with the staff at the Secretariat specifically to develop a network for scientists who have previously or are currently working with START. The intern will be actively involved in developing and implementing an accessible, user-friendly, on-line database.
Skills/Requirements
- College student or graduate with a computer science degree preferred.
- Must have technical database development experience.
- Must be able to work with Mac Computers.
- Interest in global environmental change a plus.
- Organized and able to prioritize tasks.
- Self-motivated.
- Easy going with a good attitude and sense of humor.
Hours and compensation are negotiable. We expect the intern to complete this task within a set timeline he/she will help to develop at the start of the internship.

Program Assistant
START is seeking a full-time Program Assistant to join its International Secretariat in Washington, DC USA. An ideal candidate is self-motivated, highly organized, and willing to undertake and prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced, team setting.
Responsibilities include:
- Management and upkeep of the START website using Adobe GoLive;
- Publication design and production using Adobe InDesign (to include gathering material for and producing the START Annual Report);
- Database management and upkeep;
- Occasional meeting/conference planning, organization, and support (may involve travel);
- Administrative support including, ordering office supplies, managing computer back up, maintaining START mailing lists, and hiring interns; and
- Other projects and duties as necessary.
Skills/Requirements
- College degree;
- Must be able to work with Mac Computers;
- Strong proficiency in Adobe GoLive, InDesign, and Photoshop;
- Experience in website design and management;
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
