We look forward to your involvement in the upcoming AIACC activity "Climate Change Vulnerability and Adaptation: AIACC Project Development Workshop" to be held at the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) in Trieste, Italy on June 3-14, 2002. The following are answers to questions you may have about logistical arrangements.

1. How do I reach Trieste?
You can fly to Trieste airport "Ronchi dei Legionari" from Milan, Rome, Munich and even Stanstead (London). For flight details please consult the Trieste airport web site at: http://www.aeroporto.fvg.it/aeroporto/eng/index_mise.htm

2. Where will I stay?
Due to the high number of participants, we have arranged for accommodation in three different hotels:

• Holiday Inn: In Duino, (about 25 min. from Trieste) hotel website:

The cost of your lodging will be paid directly by TWAS to the hotel. You will be responsible for paying any charges for hone calls, meals, mini-bar, etc. Breakfast is included in the cost of the lodging. You will be responsible for the costs of additional persons accompanying you (e.g. double room surcharges, etc.)

3. How do I get from the airport to the hotel?
Unless otherwise indicated in later correspondence, participants are asked to make their own arrangements to reach their hotel. Hotels can be reached either via taxi (rather expensive), Alitalia airport shuttle bus (for Jolly and Colombia hotels only), or local APT bus (very cheap). Another possible solution to cut costs is to share a taxi to Trieste or Duino, if more than one participant arrives with the same flight.

Taxis are located just outside the arrival area of the airport. Costs for a single drive from the airport to Holiday Inn (Duino): approx. 23 Euro; to Jolly or Colombia hotel (Trieste): approx. 50 Euro. You will be reimbursed for these expenses; please make every effort to obtain a receipt from your taxi driver.

Buses: bus stops are located to the right of the arrival area (when exiting the airport). The Alitalia airport shuttle buses will have a sign in the front with a symbol of the airport (FVG). There is also a local APT bus, which can take you to Trieste (local APT bus (n. 51). Both airport shuttle bus and local APT bus will reach Trieste in about 1-1.5 hrs. Bus n. 51 will stop in the vicinity of the Holiday Inn (bus stop is Sentiero Rijlke). Contact the bus driver and ask him/her to let you know when to get off to reach the Holiday Inn.

A. Local APT Bus 51

• Cost of ticket Airport to Holiday Inn (Stop: Sentiero Rijlke): 1.75 Euros one-way
• Cost of ticket Airport to Trieste central bus station: 2.55 Euros one way
• Tickets can be bought at the airport bar on the ground floor or at the post office (near the bar).
• A schedule for bus 51 is at the end of this document. The information can also be obtained at:

• Please note that bus n. 51 has many more frequent trips (between Airport and Trieste) than the airport shuttle bus. If you consult the table, you shall see that the first APT bus out of Trieste is at 4.54 am (on weekdays) or 4.55 am (on Sundays or holidays); the first bus to Trieste from the airport is at 5.40 am or 6.04 am. The central bus station in Trieste is about 5-10 min. walking distance from the Jolly and Colombia Hotel.
• Participants will be reimbursed for their costs so long we receive a receipt or ticket stub.

B. Alitalia Airport Shuttle Bus
Cost of return ticket: 8.00 Euros. Tickets are sold on board the bus.

The bus stops at the Trieste central bus station, which is approx. 5-10 min. (walking) away from Jolly Hotel and Hotel Colombia. There is an information booth in the train station (to the left of the entrance) where you can ask information on how to reach the two hotels.

Please do not take the airport shuttle bus if you are staying at Holiday Inn in Duino, as the bus will not stop there. However, this shuttle bus WILL stop at ICTP (which is the workshop site) if you must travel directly from the airport to the workshop

4. Where will the workshop take place?
The workshop is being hosted by the Third World Academy of Science, which is located on the campus of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP). ICTP is approximately 4.5 km. from Trieste city centre. The workshop training activities will take place at the Adriatico Guest House (AGH), which includes lecture halls, classrooms, a computer lab and the canteen where you will take your lunches each day. Some seminars may take place in a nearby building (Enrico Fermi), which is only a short walk away.

5. How do I get from the hotel to the workshop (AGH) each day?
We have made arrangements for busses to pick up participants staying at the various hotels. Busses will pick up participants from the hotels at 8.00 am, to arrive approx. 15-25 min. later at the Adriatico Guesthouse (AGH), where the course will take place. Busses will take participants back to their hotel at approximately 6.30 pm. (depending on the schedule each day) from the various collection points, which will be explained on the first day of the workshop.

6. What arrangements have been made for meals?
Your breakfast is included in your hotel accommodation. Participants will receive a meal coupon for lunches at the AGH canteen and are on their own for the dinners (unless otherwise indicated). You will furthermore receive a per diem allowance to cover your dinner and any incidentals. Official dinners are planned for June 3 (welcome buffet) and June 13 (farewell dinner)

7. Will I be able to check my emails during my 2-week stay?
In light of your 2-week stay in Trieste and at the ICTP Campus, we are able to make arrangements for you to have access to internet by signing up for an account. Should you prefer not to, there are 2 computers at the lower level of the AGH where people can sign on as ‘guests’, thus not requiring any kind of registration. Upon receipt of the registration form on the first day of the workshop, accounts will be active 24-48 hrs later. The Ecklund computer lab will be open during the lunch breaks and coffee breaks each day.

8. When will I be reimbursed for my travel expenses, air ticket, and per diem?
Unless you have made other arrangements with Patricia Presiren at TWAS, you will receive your reimbursement for travel expenses at the workshop. We will make every effort to get you this money within the first two days of the workshop.

10. What if I want to visit Venice during my stay?
Venice is a beautiful and unforgettable city about 2 hrs away (by train) from Trieste. We have made arrangements for a field trip to Venice on June 8 (Saturday), where participants will be able to see the city. There will be an optional programme in Venice for which participants can sign up, which will be explained at the beginning of the workshop.
