Capacity Building Projects: Fellowships and Visiting Scientists
The START Fellowship/Visiting Scientist program is intended to increase the number of developing country scientists who contribute to global change research within the frameworks of STARTs sponsoring programs, IGBP, WCRP, and IHDP. The participants contribute to related aspects of sustainable development strategies for their respective countries and regions through collaborative relationships with their colleagues, both in developing and developed countries.
Since its inception in 1995, the START Fellowship/Visiting Scientist Program has drawn applications from more than 600 scientists from developing countries. Over 170 awards have been made. Awardees contribute to the international global change research programs, to STARTs regional networks, and to the international scientific community at large through their ongoing research.
Fellowships
Global Change Fellowships are offered at the graduate and post-graduate levels to young scientists from Africa, Asia, and Oceania. START Fellows collaborate with senior mentors in leading laboratories or institutions in any part of the world, where research is being conducted on relevant regional aspects of global change. Long-term collaboration between the individuals and institution involved is another desired outcome of the programme. The duration of these fellowships is ordinarily one or two semesters (i.e. typically 4-8 months). A desired outcome is a publication in a peer-reviewed journal and/or development and submission of a research proposal.
Visiting Scientist Awards
A parallel activity, the Visiting Scientist Awards allow more senior scientists from developing countries the opportunity to undertake short-term visits to major international laboratories to become acquainted with recent advances in research. The intended outcome is the development of long-term programmatic linkages between the individuals and institutions involved. The duration of these awards is usually 1-2 months.
Who supports us?
Currently, the START Fellowship/Visiting Scientist Award program is supported through funding from the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration provides funding for fellowships related to the Global Observation of Forest Cover/Global Observation of Land Dynamics project (GOFC-GOLD). Previous awardees have been supported through the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the United Nations Development Programme/Global Environmental Facility, and the U.S. Agency for International Development.
