This institute was co-sponsored by the Asia Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN), the International Pacific Research Center (IPRC), University of Hawaii, the East West Center, and START and contributes to the Climate Variability and Predictability (CLIVAR) project of World Climate Research Program (WCRP) and Monsoon Asia Integrated Regional Study (MAIRS). Satellite observations and computing technology have helped to greatly increase our understanding of the Asian Monsoon system and modeling of the Monsoon, and to markedly increase predictive capabilities. The institute brought these advances to the attention of young researchers and scientists from the Asia Pacific region and promoted their involvement in regional collaborative research and in international science programs.
