ORGANIZERS AND SPONSORS

START (Global Change SysTem for Analysis, Research, and Training)
START, cosponsored by the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP), the International Human Dimensions Programme on global environmental change (IHDP), and the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), seeks to establish and foster regional networks of collaborating scientists and institutions in developing countries. These networks conduct research on regional aspects of environmental change, assess impacts and vulnerabilities to such changes, and provide information to policy-makers. START acts to enhance the scientific capacity of developing countries to address the complex processes of environmental change and degradation through a wide variety of training and career development programs. Activities of the START regional networks contribution to objectives and projects of START’s program sponsors as well as the International Council for Science (ICSU). START, a non-profit, non-governmental organization, mobilizes resources to support infrastructure and research programs on environmental change within developing regions.

The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR)
The National Center for Atmospheric Research is a research organization, established in 1960, that seeks to better understand our atmosphere and how weather and climate affect the Earth. NCAR’s over 120 Ph.D. researchers and hundreds of visiting scientists conduct interdisciplinary research on the earth system and particularly the role of the atmosphere. NCAR located in Boulder, Colorado and is operated by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) under a cooperative agreement with the United States National Science Foundation.

David and Lucille Packard Foundation
The David and Lucile Packard Foundation was created in 1964 by David Packard (1912–1996) and Lucile Salter Packard (1914–1987). David and Lucile Packard shared a deep and abiding interest in philanthropy. The Foundation provides grants to nonprofit organizations in the following program areas: Conservation and Science; Population; and Children, Families, and Communities. The Institute is supported through the Conservation and Science program, which seeks to protect and restore our oceans, coasts, and atmosphere and to enable the creative pursuit of scientific research toward this goal.

Global Carbon Project
The Institute has been endorsed by the Global Carbon Project, a joint initiative of the International Human Dimensions Programme, the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme, and the World Climate Research Programme. The Global Carbon Project is focused on developing a complete picture of the global carbon cycle, including its biophysical and human dimensions together with iterations and feedbacks between them.

Industrial Transformation Project
The Institute has been endorsed by the Industrial Transformation Project of the International Human Dimensions Programme on global environmental change. The Industrial Transformation Project’s goal is to explore pathways towards decoupling economic growth from the related degradation of the environment.
