AN ASSESSMENT OF THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPACTS OF FLOODS UNDER CLIMATE CHANGE CONDITIONS IN LARGE COASTAL CITIES IN SOUTH AND SOUTH-EAST ASIA
Participating Countries: Bangladesh, India, Japan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam
Principal Investigator: Dr. Dushmanta Dutta (Thailand)

This project is designed to model the changes in flood patterns in large coastal cities in South and Southeast Asia as they relate to climate change and assess the socio-economic impacts of these changes to develop a basis for policies on sustainable development. Our main objectives are:

1. To gather and analyze existing data and information to develop a GIS database to model hydrology and socio-economic variables of selected cities.
2. To adapt and apply existing tools and methodologies to simulate and assess flooding as affected by climate change.
3. To assess socio-economic impacts and vulnerability using developed tools.
4. To study the links between policy and regional flood risk management to identify gaps in existing government policies.
5. To establish a network of researchers and institutions engaged in research and policy analysis.
6. To build capacity and raise public awareness on climate change and its regional impacts.
