Lake Victoria Training Program
Participating Countries: Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia
Background:
The Lake Victoria Program is a component of the International Decade for the East Africa Lakes (IDEAL) project to study the flow of material and biogeochemical processes in the lake. More specifically, project examines input and output of material and how fluxes are affected by bio-geochemical processes, land use and other type of biota that are present in the lake. Organized by the PASS, University of Nairobi and IDEAL, this research and training project is a collaborative effort undertaken with the Kenya Marine Fisheries Research Institutes Freshwater Research Laboratory in Kisumu, Kenya. The course is recognized by many organizations such as: IUCN, LVEMP (Lake Victoria Environmental Management Project), LVFO (Lake Victoria Fisheries Organization), EU Lake Victoria Project, Austria Limnological Institute, and the Great Lakes Institute, USA.
The Lake Victoria Training Program is a training opportunity for university graduates and postgraduates from the African Great Lakes Region who are involved in conservation and management of tropical lake ecosystems and who are interested in following a career in aquatic sciences. LVTP is a multidisciplinary training in Tropical Freshwater Ecosystems Management. The carefully-selected graduates, postgraduates and young professionals from Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Malawi, Zambia and Mozambique work in government agencies and NGOs and will acquire hands-on field experience and training in aquatic sciences.
Outcomes
Held annually since 2001, the training program for 2004 took place during 8 - 29 August 2004 at the Nyegezi Freshwater Fisheries Training Institute in Mwanza, Tanzania.
