GIS and Remote Sensing Training Program
Region: All African countries.

The GIS Remote Sensing Training Program is an on-going training program initiated with funding support from the NORAD grant to START. The program sponsors African scientists to widen their skill-set to include the use of computerised capture of field observations, remote sensing, earth resources database management and GIS predictive modelling. The on-going RS/GIS Training Workshop is designed to extend the traditional earth science approach to encompass management of scientific information. The objectives of the workshop are therefore to teach participants how to collect, manage and apply state-of-the-art GIS and remote sensing techniques in earth resources exploration and environmental management.

The advance RS/GIS training is jointly conducted by professionals from the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) in Nairobi and the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) in The Netherlands. The participants are selected from a pool of active global change research scientists from West, Central, East, South and North Africa. The workshop is conducted in a series of classes (with emphasis on hands-on experience) over three weeks. Participants are taught digital terrain modelling and thematic and desktop mapping, useful for environmental impact assessment through GIS technology.

This program targets African professionals and mid-career policy-makers in the areas of resource assessment, planning, and management with background in Remote Sensing and GIS.

Products:
The first Remote Sensing and GIS training program took place from October 18 - November 5, 2004 at the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD), Nairobi, Kenya. The training program was held in conjunction with the African Association of Remote sensing of the Environment (AARSE) Geoinformation Sciences in Support of Africa’s Development Conference, in order to foster synergies between trainers and other participants in the AARSE conference.
